"Can I train my cat not to jump from the table to the floor?"
Many first time cat owners find themselves slightly overwhelmed to discover that the calm little kitten they brought home isn't as calm as they first imagine. Their calm kitten is jumping here and there knocking things off stands and counters and generally driving themselves crazy.
The first thing you have to understand is that cats natural instincts are run down prey and pounce on them.Outside a cat will climb trees and stumps and explore jumping at everything unfamiliar. In the the house there are no trees or prey so the cat has to find ways to exercise those skills, so they make up games to keep them selves amused.
As a long cat owner, I can tell you that I did not train my cat not to jump around so much as gave him alternatives to all that jumping. Hanging a toy on an elastic string in the doorway gave him something to play with that moved. I also gave him toys that he could carry and bat around.
I also found that my attaching a toy to string and pulling it around the floor also helped to train my cat not to jump around. Having the opportunity to practice his skills at playtime made him less likely to jump around at other times.
While I did not actually train my cat not to jump around I did train him to know what he could jump at and limited his natural behavior to playtime. He is much calmer and better behaved and enjoys the time we spend playing together.
He gets to indulge his natural tendencies to chase and pounce on prey and I managed to train my cat not to jump around constantly. He is far more calm and I can relax knowing that he is not going to be knocking everything in the house down.
