Solid wood furniture is magic. Let me explain.
I once lived in an empty apartment. I had a coffee table, a TV stand, a computer desk, and an air mattress. That was it.
Then I started dating, and eventually my girlfriend moved in. With her, came all her stuff. Sofas, chairs, and tables, she brought everything. Suddenly, my empty apartment came alive with character I didn't know it had.
As I grew older, I've learned that solid wood furniture especially provides a certain charm that no other type of furniture can. There's a certain appeal and warmth there that can transform an empty space into a comfortable, homey environment.
Most people I know now spend more time considering how to furnish their homes than they did on buying the home itself. I even have a few friends who are interior designers who only deal with furniture that's solid wood.
I asked them why, and they all tell me that this kind of furniture is so dependable, and it's almost universal in its appeal. This is especially true for houses with wood flooring. One of my designer friends even had an oak dining table custom built. It's literally the first thing you notice when you walk into her house.
If you can afford it, I'd insist on solid wood only. There are several reasons why, but to me it's always been a show of integrity. Yes, you can buy wood veneer that's glued to particle board that looks almost as good as wood furniture, but I doubt you'll be able to hand it down to your grandkids many years from now.
