Oak, Maple - Fine Hard Wood For Flooring
For those who want to build a hutch or small desk, or install a hard wood floor in their home, it is important that they choose the correct type of wood. Just a bit of research and reading can give the layman enough information about woods to make the proper choice. Each type of hardwood lumber has its own color, texture, grain and so on. Being able to choose from among the many choices is both a challenge and a pleasure, especially when the chosen type of wood is used to make beautiful and one-of-a-kind furniture or flooring.
The first question to ask might be: What is hard wood lumber? Hardwoods come, generally, from broadleaf trees or nut-bearing trees. Among the most popular of such trees in North America are hickory, cherry, walnut, maple and oak. The climate of this part of the globe is perfect for large growths of hardwood trees and over the centuries the lumber produced from these trees has been used for furniture, flooring and home construction.
Though the tendency is to simply class the lumber from these trees as "hardwood" there are actually some significant differences among different types. Each type of wood has been standardized by industry experts according to grain, strength and other categories. Categories of lumber help consumers when it comes time to purchase lumber for their woodworking projects.
For example, a customer that needs particularly strong wood for heavy use or continuous, daily use, might choose hickory or pecan. These types of wood can withstand considerably more pressure than others before permanent marks or damage show on the surface. For example, hickory and pecan can withstand about 1,800 pounds of pressure per square inch, while aspen is on the other end of the scale at 350 pounds of pressure before marring. Maple and oak qualify as true hard woods because they can stand pressure up to !,300 and 1,400 pounds per square inch.
This one feature makes the hard woods suitable for flooring, while those that fall slightly lower on the pressure scale are fine for furniture. Cherry, often used for furniture, is relatively strong at 950 pounds per square inch.
However, it is best to remember that hard woods come from growing plants and even after "harvesting" and being made into lumber, the wood can contract and expand. Temperature and moisture in the environment can significantly affect all woods. Care is generally taken to dry the lumber in a kiln so that the lumber is as stable as possible when it is put into use.
Lumber providers make clear distinctions between different types of wood, how the types are treated and dried, and to what use the wood is put after sale. Several retail outlets keep an inventory of hard wood lumber for all purposes. In recent years, some large lumber suppliers have even offered lumber on Web sites. Many of these new sites focus on flooring projects.
Careful thought should be given to getting the proper type of lumber for the particular woodworking or remodeling project. The finished look of the lumber should also be taken into account, with attention given to overall color, grain, feel etc. Tip: Most hard woods can be stained to give the desired color/finish, so it may be best to look closely at grain/texture when choosing hard woods.

Peaceful Co-existence: Pets and Hardwood Wood Floors
Even though it has been established by many that hardwood wood floors require regular attention when you have a pet, it is not a forgone conclusion that you must choose between your Faithful Friend and the beauty and class that hardwood wood floors can bring to an interior.
Taking care of hardwood wood floors will demand a certain level of attention, and as such it is just as easy to incorporate a few simple steps into a cleaning routine which takes your pets into account as well. In some ways, having hardwood floors in a pet's environment is a great alternative to carpeting. Hardwood wood floors make the clearing away of animal hair and dander a much simpler exercise. Pets enjoy the coolness of hardwood, and will often remain in those areas away from your carpeting. This can save a lot of time and bother when it comes to vacuuming.
Be Vigilant
Overall, the key principle to remember about hardwood wood floors and pets is awareness and timely action. Responsible pet owners are likely to find success when it comes to taking care of their hardwood floors as well as their furry friends. Provided that you keep a few things in mind, you may well enjoy the company of your pets as well as the high quality a hardwood wood floor's unique appearance will lend to your interior for years to come. Some actions to take when it comes to pets and hardwood wood floors may include:
Considering some areas of your interior to be "no pet zones"Clipping your pet's claws to avoid scratching the surface of hardwood wood floors
Seeking ways of avoiding spillage from pet water dishes - buy broad-based water dishes or water dishes that come with a spill-resistant stand
Making use of strategically placed mats to protect from spills and wet paws fresh from outdoor exploration. Make sure that wet mats don't sit too long on your hardwood wood floor.
Assuming the worst when it comes to urine stains and lingering odors even before they happen. Seek advice from pet store retailers and DIY experts about how to treat the surface of a hardwood wood floor in the event of an "accident". Always follow the instructions as stipulated by manufacturers of stain-removal products
Being prepared to clear water spills and urine right away - don't leave messes to sit
One option to explore of course is finding out about as many flooring options as you feel are viable as alternatives to hardwood wood floors. Many varieties of flooring (laminate flooring, porcelain tile et al) are very conducive to high pet-traffic, and with comparatively less to worry about when it comes to many of the elements discussed here. Look at as many as you can and know how much attention each option will demand when it comes to your pet. In weighing the pros and cons when it comes to a choice of flooring and your pet, you may save yourself a significant amount of bother and expense in the future.

Home Improvement Tip - Fixing a Squeaky Floor
Question: I have a floor that every single time I step on it I get the most annoying sound. I don't know what it does to me or why it bothers me so much. My kitchen floor squeaks and actually moves up and down if you are standing on it. The whole floor moves. How do I stop it from moving and squeaking. Help Me Greg!
Answer: It sounds like you have a broken floor joist. You are going to have to go under your house. If you have a basement this will be a little easier to fix. It is my guess that you don't have a basement or you would have seen the broken floor joist by now.
Have someone stand on the floor in the spot that squeaks and have them move up and down while you are under the house. Don't have them jump up and down while you are under the house. This could cause more damage to the structural framing of the floor. Once you are in the right position under the floor you can have them start moving slowly. What you are looking for is one of the floor joist that are moving.
If you see one of them moving. Look to see where the damage is. Is it a split, crack, wood rot or a big knot in the wood that has loosened up and fell out. Once you find the damaged floor joist you can now think about repairing it.
If you don't see any floor joist moving. Have the person on top start moving a little bit more and you can even have them jump on it a few times until you see something out of place. If you still don't see any broken floor joist. Start looking at the sub-floor, this will be plywood of some form, 1 x 6 or 2 x 6 materials.
What you are looking for is movement of any kind. Is there a separation or movement between the sub-floor and the floor joist. If you still can't find the problem maybe it is time to call in a professional.
The main thing you are going to be looking for is movement of any kind.
Most squeaky floors are caused from the sub-floor rubbing up and down on a nail. If you have carpeting and you have a squeaky floor you can do your best to locate a floor joist and screw right through your carpeting into the floor joist.

A Woman's Guide to Having a One-Night Stand
Saturday night, the crowd is jumping and the music is jamming. I was on the prowl. In walks one of the hottest guys I ever seen. Tonight looks promising and he's definitely coming home with me tonight. After a few drinks and a couple of dances that looked like we were making love in the club, we hailed a cab and half hour later he's in my apartment. With a touch of a button, slow music starts pouring out of the stereo.
After a few drinks of Stone's Ginger Wine, sexy sounds of Usher slowly wafting from the speakers of my stereo, we were ready to make love in my club. He was good, very good and I had a lot of fun but all good things eventually come to an end. I looked at the alarm clock on nightstand and it was reading 6a.m. I was in a good mood, so I'll let him sleep for another hour after which it would be time for him to go. An hour later I woke him up, called him a cab, thanked him for a wonderful night and went back to bed with Usher still playing in the background. Later I got up and called my girlfriends and told them all about the hot stud I picked up last night. Good memories. That was a one night stand!
Ladies, we all have a wild side, which we would like to explore and let loose before marriage, husband and kids begin to take up our time. So before you loose your precious single minutes begin living up your single life. There are no rules that say that you can't have and enjoy one night stands. It's not something that was invented just for men. But in order to handle a one-night stand, there are a few things to know first. While there is no need to be polite, there is no cause to be rude either unless the one night stand is having an attitude. If the sex was great then that gets them a ticket to spending the night, but if it was not that great, he needs to leave right after it's over.
Wish him a safe ride back to his place, turn the double locks in your door, take a shower and go to bed. Maybe finish that bottle of Ginger Wine. For a sleepover to occur there has to several redeeming factors, the sex was phenomenal, it's very late at night and there are no trains or taxi's that early in the morning. Also, it depends on the distance they would have to travel to go back to their place. With all those factors, then it is OK for them to sleep over for the next few hours until dawn, but at the crack of dawn they have to be up and out of your bed and your apartment.
A one night stand is not the beginning of a relationship, so there should be no dates the next day. That includes, brunch, dinner, supper and any other get together activities, unless it's for a repeat of the night before. You are not friends, it was just sex. If one party wants more out of the one night stand, then said party needs to consider a restraining order, because there maybe a potential stalker in the making. A one night stand is not a pre-cursor to a long-term relationship. Usually, when an individual partakes in a one-night stand, they have no intention of seeing the other party again.
Unfortunately, for one young lady who had a one night stand while on Spring Break in Puerto Rico, only to return to New York and run into the guy at her workplace on the first day of her new job. Not good. However there is one exception to the non-relationship one-night stand rule. There are times when a one-night stand can become a repeat situation. It can stand on its own or it can turn into a friends with benefits situation, which is a where you both get together every so often for some good sex, then that is an on-going relationship with some obvious restrictions. In this instance it is easy to develop some deeper feelings. If this happens you either express your feelings immediately to the other person and see if they are on the same page or you pull back from your involvement with this individual.
There are a few exceptions to one-night stands. If there was an emotional/spiritual connection on the dance floor, that means the sex will be phenomenal. Usually when that happens, by way of the connection, engaging in light, easy going conversation is ok. With that comes a feeling of relaxation and you may turn your one night stand into a friend's with benefits situation. Let things flow naturally. Do not look for a one night stand to have possibilities. Ladies, if you are looking for possibilities and start to have expectations, then be advised, forewarned or just plain have a friend slap you upside your head as a reminder, do not enter into one night stands. You will not be able to handle it.
This no-strings attached behaviour is not for the faint of heart. You have to be emotional stable and not be on the hunt for that special someone. A friend of mine had a one night stand while on vacation in Paris last year. It was a fitting end to a night of dancing and high energy. The other party seemed mature enough, but then after a few Mojitos and Caipirinhas all hot guys would seem mature. When the night was over, she thanked him and went back to her hotel. Since the guy was cool, she had given him her cell number and a year later he still calls to talk about that night being the best night of his life. And he lives in Paris! He just doesn't get it that it was just sex while on vacation and nothing more. My friend had to change her number.
One night stands are very common especially among college students. It's very easy to hook up with a dorm mate or with other hot college students partying on Spring Break. However, one night stands occurs all the time between all sorts of people. As long as the participating individuals act responsibly then it's their prerogative. Some people frown on one night stands and understandably so.
There are downsides to one night stands:
-You do not know the person you are taking into your apartment and that can be dangerous.
-You may not even reach home and then if no one knows where you are then you can be in even worse danger.
It is important at all times that if you do decide to have a one night stand, call a friend and let him or her know where you will be for the night or who will be in your apartment at 4am in the morning.
However, ladies, do not get in the practice of having only one night stands. Remember, that while they can be enjoyable and exotic especially if you are on vacation in an exotic location, continuous one night stands are empty and have nothing long term to offer.

How to Choose the Best Stand For Your LCD TV?
LCD TVs are made to give you high definition and quality picture for a brighter viewing experience. And in order to maximize the performance of your LCD TV, it deserves the best and durable stand. It will enhance the beauty of your television in its entirety. But how do you choose a perfect stand to match your LCD TV?
Varieties of LCD TV stands are coming out in the market. They come in different shapes, sizes, designs and texture. This means that the consumers have a wide range of selection - big or small; wood, fiberglass or metallic. It is up to you to choose the one that fits your taste.
When purchasing an LCD TV stand, there are some things that you need to consider. First, you should ensure that the stand is firm and durable to support the weight of your television. It does not mean that if the stand is bigger then it can hold the capacity of the TV. It is advisable to check your TV manuals to verify its weight capacity. You also need to look at the materials on which the stand is made of, this will lead you in choosing the right one.
The space in your room is the second thing that you need to consider. If you are tired of always finding the right position for your TV stand, you will need to check on your floor space. If you have wide living room, stand with a swivel might be the appropriate one. If you have sufficient space between the stand and the wall, then you can turn your TV in a full 360 degrees rotation for flexibility in viewing - this is the purpose of the swivel. Now, if you find it hard to transfer stand from one room to another, better to use a stand with wheels or casters. This portability feature makes it easy to move your LCD TV.
The third consideration is the design of the stand. Certain designs may not conform to the theme or motif of the room where the stand will be placed. The color, the texture and the material of the stand should have harmony with the room for you to appreciate the beauty of your LCD TV and to make your viewing experience more relaxing.
Prices of LCD TV stand range of hundred to thousand dollars depending on its quality, design, capacity and material. That should not be a problem, use your creativity, call a carpenter to help you build your own stand according to your preference. Thus, you will surely appreciate the stand designed by no other than - yourself.

Gymnastics Floor Music - Choosing the Perfect Gymnastics Floor Routine Music For You!
Choosing the right gymnastics floor music is a critical component for a great routine. For this reason, picking out gymnastics floor music is not something that should be done in a hurry or overnight. It should take a lot of thought and consideration. This is the music you will be practicing and performing to for quite awhile. It is essential that you as a gymnast personally enjoys and connects to the music you are going to perform to. The routine needs to stand out from all others; uniqueness and quality are key when it comes to picking gymnastics floor music.
When choosing gymnastics floor music, make sure you select something you really enjoy. You also want to make certain the music you choose displays your personality and talents. If you pick gymnastics music that is inspiring to you, you will have an emotional connection to it, giving you everything you need to get the judges and crowd involved.
Okay, so pick gymnastics music you like, not too hard, right? Well there is more; not only do you have to like it but you also have to be able to perform to it. What I mean by this is don't pick a hip hop song if you can pop, lock, and drop it. Don't pick a classical song if you aren't graceful or don't have elegant and fluid gymnastics dance with flawless leaps and turns. Make sure your gymnastics floor music matches your style of skills and gymnastics dance. If you are energetic and a powerful tumbler make sure your music accentuates that by having a good beat and fast tempo that sets the tone of your routine.

How To Install Laminate Flooring
When you decide to install laminate flooring, you have the look of a hardwood floor, without the worry and the maintenance. You can easily install your own laminate flooring if you take a little time to do some research.
The first thing you need to realize is all laminate flooring manufacturers have their own procedures for installation. It is recommended that you read and follow the installation procedures for the specific laminate flooring you buy. It may seem like they are all the same, but there are small differences in certain aspects of installation like gluing. If you don't follow the manufacturer's instructions that were supplied with your purchase, any mistakes you make may void the product's warranty. Though each manufacturer may have different procedures there are a few things they all have in common.
The first thing you will need is a level sub floor to lay the planks over. The floor should be stable and flat with no gaps greater than 3 inches. You must ground off the high spots and fill in the low spots to make the floor flat. You have to take into account a ¼ inch gap along the whole edge of the installation. If the floor is too close to a wall or touching it, the flooring will most likely fail.
A laminate floor must be allowed to adjust to the final surrounding. This will take two or three days. You cannot bring home a floor and install it. You need to allow the laminate flooring to acclimate to the new environmental conditions before you begin the installation process.
When you begin, do not use any material that seems to have been damaged. If you do, your warranty may not apply. Be sure you inspect the large format laminate flooring for any flaws or defects.
If you need to fit the laminate flooring around any pipes, you need to measure, and drill the holes at least ½" larger than the span of the pipe. This will allow for any movement. Cut at a 45 degree angle to the holes in the tile.
You should always protect your laminate flooring by using felt protectors for chairs and any other heavy furniture you may have that may scar the flooring. If you need to move furniture, be sure you lift and move it before you set it back down on the floor.
If you install your own laminate flooring, you will save a ton of money. It doesn't have to be a difficult process if you familiarize yourself with the instructions and have all the tools you will need on hand. You can find out any additional information on the web or you can ask a friend for their help. You will be proud to stand back and see the beauty of your handiwork.

He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not
so confused
where do I stand?
do you want to be here
with me hand in hand
are we the same people
we were when we met?
or are you changing me
are you my biggest threat?
I cant tell anymore
where I end and you begin
my heart has hit the floor
over and over again.
you showed me what
it was like to fall in love
I gave to you my heart
and now its empty of
all the things I thought I'd feel
all the dreams I thought were real.
everything I said to you
has disappeared into the dark dark
night, out of sight from my naked eyes.
and now all I wear is this disguise
you made for me, to make me real
your perfect girl, what a deal.
if I was myself,
would you love me less?
or should I be quiet,
I know it'd be less stress.
I feel so real
with your arms around me
your perfect girl
is now reality.
but when I'm gone,
I see the truth
I see the girl
that I once knew.
should I keep her here?
to love and hold
or should she disappear
should I be so bold?
my words are running out of time
this girl is leaving.
entering a world of lying,
fake and deceiving
herself because the man she loves
cant be with this girl
thats unworthy of
his life, his love, his dreams.
hello world,
this perfect girl has arrived
this perfect smile is a lie
lets take it in, pretend its real
lets show these people
you're good at making things
and breaking things. lets show them.

Flooring Choices - How Do You Decide?
If you're reading this you're looking for flooring--or thinking about looking for flooring and, failing a magic wand, hoping for some guidelines to simplify the process. If you're renovating, flooring is just one of many decisions you need to make. And face it, even if you're not renovating nine times out of ten a new floor means new room decor so be warned--new paint, trim and window treatments are soon to follow.
Budget, lifestyle, room use/traffic patterns and taste are the main considerations to help you navigate a world of choice. Let's consider each one in turn.
Flooring prices that meet your budget
Is money no object? Or are you juggling preferences and practicalities within clear spending limits? Here's a very general rule of thumb: medium grade installed carpet or vinyl runs about one-third of the price of hardwood or ceramic installed in the same space; installed laminate is roughly two-thirds of the price. That said the variety of quality and choice is seen in the range of floor pricing--installed vinyl can be anywhere from $1.40 to $6.50 a square foot, installed laminate from $2.50 to $7.50 and installed hardwood from $9.00 to $12.00.
Of course, if you're handy and undaunted at the thought of doing your own installation all bets are off. You can save a lot of money as long as you know what you're doing, have the requisite time, skill, tools, patience and understanding roommates. (Remember, your work encroaches on their evenings, weekends and holiday time too.)
Brands and warranties also factor into budget considerations. Basically the longer the warranty period, the better the floor and the higher the price. You do get what you pay for so if you want flooring that will last, look for a decent warranty along with brand recognition. Recommended brands are mentioned in the lifestyle section below.
Flooring that suits your lifestyle
Are you a growing family, on your own or a couple? Do you entertain alot? Are you planning to move in the near future or putting down roots? Do you have the time and inclination to vacuum often or is the broom your best friend? Do you have pets? (In a tank or fur-bearing? Bigger than a guinea-pig? Do they get the run of the house? Indoors, outdoors or both?) The answers to these questions will give you a sense of what flooring is suited to your needs. Consider the following pros and cons.
Carpet is warm, comfortable and cushy, usually well-warrantied and stain resistant. A lower grade will show stains, wear and tear quicker than a higher quality grade, and Berber makes a great choice for kids and pets. Regular vacuuming and spot-cleaning will keep your carpet in good shape but here I have to admit to a personal bias. Vacuuming is not my hobby and I've yet to meet a rug that stands up well over time to furballs, pet hair and pet odours. (Though I do recommend the industrial wet/dry shop-vac if you have dogs--we had 3.) Recommended brands--Richmond, Shaw, Coronet, National. For stain resistance, look for the Stainmaster Seal.
Vinyl makes a practical cushioned floor for a bathroom, hallway or kitchen. It doesn't hold odour and it's easy to clean. It comes in a huge variety of patterns and looks, mimicing ceramic and even hardwood. While vinyl is surprisingly durable, with the current trends towards hard-surface flooring few choose it for a family or living room. We inherited vinyl tile flooring in our living area and it made a good-looking, resilient covering for several years. Recommended brands--Armstrong, Tarkett.
Laminate is a hugely practical, popular flooring choice. Plank flooring comes in every colour, pattern and finish imaginable--your floor can look like bamboo, heritage oak or highly polished hardwood. Ceramic and cork are also available on a laminate tile tongue and groove backing for ease of installation. Durable, easy to clean, scratch and stain resistant, laminate can chip if heavy objects are dropped with a lot of force. Mop up spills right away--laminate does not do well in the wet. Recommended brands--Pergo, Laurentian, Armstrong, Wicanders.
Ceramic tile makes a beautiful, practical choice. Available in a variety of tile sizes for floors, detail work and backsplashes. Ceramic is breakable and it isn't cushy underfoot--if you put it in the kitchen, use a non-slip mat in the standing area. Recommended brands--Casa Roma, Centura, Olympia Tile.
Hardwood is a classic flooring favourite. If you're concerned about scratches and markings go with a harder hardwood--oak, maple, cherry or bamboo. Eventually all hardwoods will mark, but marks are a characterisitic of wood and floors can always be refinished. The variation in pattern and colour that natural hardwood provides is timeless. Recommended brands--Bruce, Laurentian.
Something green? Bamboo hardwood is harvested from the bark of the tree, which replenishes in about 5 years. It takes 23 years to replace a mature oak tree--and bamboo is 23% harder than oak.
Flooring that fits your room use and traffic patterns
What room are you updating with a new floor? How do you use the space and who uses it most? Does your family spend a lot of time there or is it a high-traffic, pass-through area? High-traffic pass-throughs show wear more quickly so invest in a quality floor cover with a good warranty. While there are no hard and fast rules, the following is a list of common choices by area:
Bathroom - vinyl, ceramic, laminate
Kitchen - vinyl, ceramic
Living Room - carpet, laminate, hardwood
Family Room/basement/games room - carpet, laminate, hardwood
Study - carpet, laminate, hardwood
Bedroom - carpet, laminate, hardwood
Hall - carpet, vinyl, laminate, hardwood
Entrances - ceramic, vinyl, laminate
Stairs - carpet, laminate, hardwood
There's no accounting for taste
Taste is the indefinable element that often overrides every other consideration. Unless you're moving, you'll live with your choice for a long time so you'd better love it. Limit the number of people involved in making the final decision to two, and then figure out which options you both like. Be prepared: the person with more passion for style, color and fashion often sways the vote. In our household when we find something we both love we buy it--that's why we're finally trading in the vinyl tiles for bamboo hardwood! (That is, after the requisite paint and trim updates are complete. Yours truly is having too much fun painting out the old floor along with the walls!)
